Try your hand at a new hobby by signing up for Spindletop Gladys City Boomtown Museum’s Elementary Bladesmith Class. Class will be held on Sat., Sep.12 at 10 a.m.

Class participants will learn basic blacksmith techniques by museum resident blacksmith, Rob Flurry. These

techniques will then be applied to make a knife out of a railroad spike. Flurry has more than 40 years’ experience and has been featured in “Texas Monthly” and the documentary, “Blacksmith,” which was filmed at the Spindletop Gladys City Boomtown Museum.

Everyone 16 and older is invited to take the class; however, 16 and 17-year-olds must be accompanied by a parent. Those who wish to participate must register in advance by calling the museum or coming to the museum gift shop to sign up. The cost is $150. A $50 deposit is required at sign up. The balance is due on the day of the class. Space is limited to six students, so it is important to sign up early.

“This is a very popular and fun class,” said Museum Director Troy Gray. “It is fun to watch the students learn a craft that was so important at the time of Spindletop.”
