Patent Committee Meeting
February 28, 2019   1:00pm
Wayne A Reaud Bldg. Room 304

Attendees: Srinivas Palanki, Jim Marquart, James Henry, Jane Liu, Bogdana Bahrim, and Craig Ness

Meeting called to order by Dr. Palanki at 1:00pm.

 I. Approve April 2018 minutes

James Henry: Remove the line within the discussion for Daniel Chen’s invention disclosure, “will proceed with moving toward a patent” and replace it with “find technical partners”.

Dr. Palanki: Motion to approve April 2018 minutes. All approved.

April 2018 minutes approved.

II. Use of TriMonte for market analysis

Dr. Palanki: TriMonte came and gave a presentation to myself, Dr. Marquart, and Dr. Brenda Nichols. TSUS uses TriMonte for market analysis on invention disclosures and can aid on tech transfers. They charge a fee of $2000 per analysis or there is a retainer option. Lamar does not have inventions to keep them on retainer. The bill will go to TSUS and then from there it makes it way to the CFO of the university.

Is the committee agreeable to use them on a one to one per time to review invention disclosures the committee feels are worth pursuing? If in favor a show of hands.

All attending raised hands in support. Motion passed.

III. Continuation of existing patents

We have two patents for John Guo. He is no longer at Lamar and is at Tennessee. We received a bill for maintenance for the next two years. for the two patents and because Dr. Palanki had just joined ORSPA, these bills were paid due to not having time to review the patent and see if Lamar is making money on their investment. At this time, we are not receiving anything. So, the decision needs to be made as to whether or not Lamar wants to continue this in the future.

Discussion continues but no definitive answer is given.

IV. Updates on invention disclosures:

Pderam Asef/Mohammadreza/Ramon Bargallo Perpina, Hamed Pourgharibshahi/Hassan Zargarzadeh, Saeed Moazami/Hassan Zargarzadeh/Srinivas Palanki, and Dan Philip Fernandes.

Dr. Henry: Regarding the four invention disclosures: Because it has been a while, have the PI’s resubmit information regarding their invention such as market, if they found other inventions like theirs out there, etc.  After the resubmission the committee can evaluate them and make a decision if moving forward is warranted.  If so then TriMonte can give us a market analysis on the ones chosen.

Dr Palanki: For the record, Dan Fernandes is a doc student of Daniel Chen’s He is still a current student. Dr. Palanki will need to speak with Texas Sate to find out what they are doing regarding invention disclosures from students. Find out if there is a policy in place with the state and how does Lamar move forward

Action items

James Henry will pull John Guo’s patent information and see if there is anything work doing a market analysis and tech transfer on. This will aid in the decision as to renew the patent or not.

Dr. Palanki adjourned the meeting at 1:40pm
